Home-warming Party

by Doreen F.

Linda was invited to a party at her brother’s new flat. She was really curious about how this evening was going to be. Her brother Franco had been away for some time studying abroad and there he had fallen in love with a woman from Argentina. They had decided to get married. The wedding had taken place in Argentina, but Linda’s family had been invited of course. Their new relatives were really kind and the wedding was great. Linda liked her sister-in-law a lot and she was happy for her brother that he had finally found the right woman. Linda hadn’t been that lucky yet. Most of her relationships didn’t last very long and they were usually ended by her boyfriends. She had broken up sometimes too, but most of the times she had been left. Only recently her boyfriend had dumped her for a really dumb blond who looked like a Barbie doll and also had a similar size of brain. Therefore she was glad to go to her brother’s party because she liked meeting new people and she wanted to get her mind off her ex-boyfriend.

Her brother had moved back to his home town with Celia, his wife, because he had been offered a great job and Celia had been able to get a job a sister company of where she had been working. They had bought a huge flat and decided to throw a party. So Celia would get to know most of her husband’s friends and could invite some of hers too.

Linda lived at the other end of town and since her car had broken down the week before and she hadn’t had the time to get it fixed, she went to the party by public transport hoping she could spend the night at her brother’s.

When she arrived, there weren’t many people there, many had said that they were going to be late. So Linda helped Celia in the kitchen and after some time more and more people arrived and it became a really nice party. Linda recognised many of her brother’s friends whom she had known for a very long time, but hadn’t seen for ages.

It was close to midnight, when two more guests arrived. One of them looked really familiar to Linda, but she couldn’t place him. The only thing she knew was that he was really gorgeous. All of them were having a great time and the food was really delicious. As time passed some people left and around two there were a few of them left. Linda had already talked to her brother and they had agreed that she was to spend the night at his flat. Franco knew that Linda didn’t have that much money and didn’t want her to waste it on a taxi ride throughout the whole city. Linda was glad because she felt really comfortable and didn’t like going by taxi at all. The gorgeous guy had arrived with his brother and his brother wanted to leave too.

“Oh, come on Benny, let’s stay a little longer, it’s so much fun here”, he told his brother.

“I’m sorry Phil, but I really have to get up quite early tomorrow and I’m the one who’s driving. You’ve had too much to drive anyway”, Benny answered.

“I know, I know, but I’m really having a great time here.” Phil smiled at Linda when he said that.

She had noticed that he had been looking at her quite often, but they hadn’t talked yet. Another “what if”-man, Linda thought.

“All right, I’ll give you another ten minutes, but then we leave, okay?”

“Well, I don’t have a choice, do I?” Phil gave in.

During those ten minutes Phil looked at Linda more often, but never said a word to her.

After the time was up, Benny got up saying, “Guys, we gotta go, I’m sorry, but I have to work tomorrow.”

Franco who hadn’t been in the room when they were having the conversation about leaving, replied, “Oh, what a pity, now there are only five of us left and we had really wanted to play Activity in 3 teams. Now we can’t. Don’t you want to stay a little longer?”

“Phil wants to, but I can’t and since he has come with me, he has to leave with me, right?”

“No, no, no, wait! Phil, you’d want to stay?”

“Yeah, I’d love to, but I can’t. You know where we live, don’t you?”

“Of course, I know. But why don’t you stay for the night? The flat’s big enough and there’s only Linda staying for the night anyway.”

“Yeah, well, I mean, if that’s alright for you Benny, I’d love to accept the offer.”

“Of course, Phil.”

Benny left and the other started to play Activity. Linda and Phil were to play in one team. Both seemed delighted by this decision. The game was a lot of fun and Phil and Linda were a great team. They nearly won, but Celia and Franco were luckier and won. After the game Franco’s two other friends who were still there decided to leave. It was already 4 a.m.

“Let’s go to bed, shall we?” Franco said.

The others agreed and Celia prepared the guestroom for them.

“I’m sorry, we have only one bed, but I hope that’s okay for you.”

Linda nodded, but Phil offered to sleep on the couch.

“No, don’t be silly, we’re adults, we can share a bed, right?”

“Yeah, I just thought you don’t want to share a bed with someone you hardly know.”

“That’s really sweet of you, but I don’t mind.”

Linda went to the bathroom to wash her face and returned in no time at all. Phil had already taken off his shirt and his jeans and was wearing boxer shorts only. While he was in the bathroom, Linda took off her shirt and her jeans and remained wearing her shirt and underpants. She thought about lying down, but remembered that they hadn’t decided who would lie on which side of the bed. Linda decided to wait for Phil. In the meantime she went to the kitchen to drink a glass of water and wandered what was taking Phil so long. Finally he came back.

“Hey, I thought girls spend more time in the bathroom than boys”, Linda said jokingly.

“I bet at your home you need much longer than today”, Phil replied.

“Yeah, but not that long anyway. … So, which side of the bed do you prefer?”

“I don’t care, choose one and I’ll take the other.”

“Alright“, Linda said and lay down on the left side.

“Great, I really do prefer the right, that’s perfect, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, what a coincidence!”

Phil lay down next to her, but then he got up again to switch off the light. Lying next to Phil, Linda felt really comfortable.

“Phil, how did you and my brother get to know each other?”

“We met at university, we played in the same football team, Benny Franco and I. That’s how we got to know each other. We often went out after the training and became really good friends.”

“I thought you looked familiar, that’s probably because I’ve seen you when I was watching Franco’s matches, right?“

“It might be, but I quit playing after one year because I didn’t have that much time and I didn’t want to risk to get injured. Some games were really tough, you know?”

“Mhm, I always thought it looked a bit brutal.”

“It definitely is. I had some minor injuries, but serious enough for me to quit.”

They continued talking for a while, but soon they got really tired and fell asleep. When Linda woke up it was already noon, but Phil was still asleep.

“He’s drop dead gorgeous”, Linda thought.

She got up and went to the bathroom. Franco and Celia were still asleep and so was Phil. Linda tried to be really quiet when she made her way back to the room. Since she wasn’t tired anymore, Linda decided to get dressed and have breakfast. Trying not to make any noise Linda put on her jeans and her shirt, but somehow Phil must have heard her because he woke up. He yawned and stretched before he opened his eyes. When he opened his eyes he rubbed gently them and blinked.

“Good morning Phil, did I wake you?”

“’morning, yes, you woke me up, but I don’t mind, really. What time is it anyway?”

“Noon, I think. Wanna have some breakfast?”

“Yeah, that’d be nice.”

“Okay, I’ll see what I can get for us in the kitchen, you can go to the bathroom in the meantime.”

„Great idea“, Phil said and got up.

Now Linda noticed his perfectly shaped body. “Wow”, she thought. Phil got dressed and went to the bathroom, while Linda went to kitchen to get them some breakfast and coffee. Finally Phil came and they had breakfast. During their conversation Phil seemed a distracted and kept rubbing his eyes and blinked a lot. To Linda they looked quite red.

“Phil, are you okay”, she asked when he once hadn’t been paying attention to their conversation.

“Yeah, why?”

“Because you don’t pay any attention and you keep rubbing your eyes which by the way are really red.”

“I know. I’m not much fun at the moment, aren’t I? My contact lenses are killing me.”

“What? You had them in all night? No wonder they bother you.”

“I know, but I didn’t take any paraphernalia with me to this party or the contact case, so what should I have done? I didn’t plan to stay the night, but I wanted to spend more time with you and I didn’t want to leave and I have slept in contacts before.”

“That’s so silly of you, but really cute. But what can we do about your eyes right now?”

“Well, that’s a good question. I removed them in the bathroom and put them in again, but that didn’t help at all.”

“Okay, today’s Sunday, shops are closed, but I have an idea. Come over to my place because my roommate has contacts too. You could borrow her case and then I’ll go with you to your home, okay?”

“I can’t think of anything else we could do.”

Linda quickly wrote a note thanking Franco and Celia for their hospitality and then they left. By public transport it took them only 15 minutes to Linda’s flat. Phil kept his eyes closed most of the time because this was more comfortable for him. At Linda’s place she quickly told her roommate about the problem and she had a spare contact case for Phil. He washed his hands and then quickly removed the contacts putting them into the case.

Then he sighed, “I wouldn’t have been able to stand this much longer. It’s a bit better now, but my eyes are still kind of irritated.”

He managed a smile.

Linda offered him cold cucumber for his eyes, but he declined.

“I feel so stupid, you know, but I really enjoyed the party and I thought that my only chance to get to talk to you, was to stay.”

“I’m glad you stayed because I wanted to talk to you as well, but somehow I didn’t dare.”

“That’s good to know, otherwise my eyes would be a pain in the ass for nothing at all.”

“Shall I accompany you to your place now?”

“Yeah, that’d be nice and I’d love to see you clearly again.”

“What’s your vision like at the moment?”

“That’s hard to explain, but if you moved a bit farther away from me, I wouldn’t recognise you, if I didn’t know it was you.”

“Oh, poor you. Let’s go then, shall we?”

Linda and Phil left her flat and went to the metro station. Phil kept holding Linda’s hand because he felt really insecure seeing as little as he did. Most people were blurred, but he trusted Linda to bring him home. He told her where to get off the train and which exit to take. Linda described the places to him and he told her where to go. About half an hour later they came to the flat Phil shared with his brother Benny.

“You’ve got the keys, don’t you?” Linda suddenly wanted to know.

“Yeah, the keys I have at least. That’s important because Benny’s working.”

They went up to Phil’s flat and while Linda went to the living room, Phil went into his room to get his glasses and clean his contacts. When he returned, Linda was looking at some photographs.

“Here I am, back again, good to actually see you again.”

“Yeah, I’m glad you’re better now. You seemed a bit desperate, but who wouldn’t.”

Linda turned around and Phil’s look caught her breath. She had never thought that glasses could make such a drop dead gorgeous guy even more attractive, but with Phil, that was the case.

“Wow, you look great in glasses.”

“Really, do you think so? Or are you just trying to be nice?”

“Not at all, I really mean it, I’m totally serious.”

“Well”, Phil said adjusting his glasses, “I think you have to prove it to me.”

“Okay, I swear that you look incredible right now”, Linda said and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Is that proof enough?”

“Well, for the moment, it is”, Phil said with a smile. “Do you want something to eat? I think our breakfast was some time ago and rather short because of me, right? Shall I cook something for you?”

“That’d be great!” Linda said and gave Phil soft kiss.

Phil went into the kitchen and Linda followed him. She watched him cut potatoes and out them into the pan. Then he cut onion, red pepper and chilli and put them into the pan as well. He didn’t explain anything and they chatted a bit while he was cooking. After some time he mixed 3 eggs and poured them into the pan. Instead of scrambling them inside he didn’t do anything. Some minutes later Phil took a plate and by using the plate he managed to turn the ingredients upside down. Then he parted the food and gave each of them one half.

“So here’s my famous tortilla a la España.”

“Wow, I’ve really been wondering what this was going to be. I’ve never heard of that.”

“Try it and you’ll see.”

That was exactly what Linda did and to her surprise the food was extraordinarily delicious. The topping was certainly that she could watch Phil all the time while eating and he was so gorgeous, especially with his glasses.

After they had finished Phil asked, “So, did you like it?”

“Phil, this was really delicious. You’re a great chef. Especially the chilli inside was great for the taste.”

“I’m glad you liked it. The chilli can be a pain in the ass though. It’s so hot and stays on your hands like forever. I once forgot about it and then there was something in my eye. I rubbed it with my finger. That really hurt. I had my contacts in which added some extra pain. My eye went really red. I couldn’t see anything.”

“That must have been hurt like hell. It’s painful without contacts, I can’t imagine what it was like for you.”

“I had to remove the contact and even then it took some minutes for my eye to recover. Now I’m more careful; at least I try to be.”

Phil removed the plates and put them into the dish-washer. Then he asked Linda to sit down in the living-room for some tea. She was readily accepted because she didn’t want to leave yet.

“I could go to the bathroom to put in my contacts now.”

“There is no need for that. Stay here. Your eyes certainly need a break. Besides I told you that you look great just the way you are right now. If you really want to, I can’t stop you, but you don’t have to do it because of me.”

“Yes, sorry, I forgot, but most of my former girlfriends wanted me to be wearing contacts all the time. I’m not used to girls like you.”

“Am I so different?”

“Kind of, but I can’t really explain what it is. However, I felt it from the very beginning last night.”

“You’re so kind. I was really interested in you, but you seemed so shy. You hardly talked to me until we played the game.”

“I know, I’m very shy due to some bad experience I’ve had. I thought my only chance to get to know you was to stay at the party for as long as possible.”

“That was a great idea.”

“Yes, but this afternoon was not part of my plan. I thought I could tolerate the contacts until I was home. I guess I was wrong.”

“You were wrong about that, but isn’t it great that some things turn out really well or even better than you anticipated even though something goes terribly wrong?”

“That is so true about the party and today. I thought I would put you off, if you knew about my bad eyes, but in fact you were really understanding. Besides, you saved me from the trouble of going home on my own seeing nothing. I might have had to take out my contacts at some public place and might have lost them without your roommates’ help.”

“When you say that, it sounds really dramatic.”

“That’s part of my job, I’m a journalist.”

“So what would have been the headline for our encounter?”

“Cute wise girl saves stupid blind journalist from a lot of trouble and making a complete fool of himself.”

“You are exaggerating. You are not stupid and not blind.”

“I know, but I’m really short-sighted, you can’t deny that.”

“No I can’t. I can’t imagine how you would have come home all by yourself without contact lenses. You nearly ran into some people and other things today.”

“Really? I didn’t see them. So you prevented me from making a complete fool of myself, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I did, but you didn’t even notice.”

“No, I simply trusted you and it was good to feel your hand which guided me.”

“You’re exaggerating again!”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Just kidding, I don’t mind.”

“You know what I really regret?”

“No, tell me!”

“I was thinking about going to the party in glasses because I had been wearing my contacts since early in the morning, but then I thought that there might be some cute girls and they would be put off by them.”

“You better not regret it. If you had been wearing glasses, I would have been to sooo distracted be you all evening and still would have been too shy to say a word to you. Maybe you would have thought I was queer and you wouldn’t have stayed the night. I think it was great the way it was.”

“Yes, it was, but my eyes would have felt better, if I had treated them with more care.”

“I’m sure they’ll forgive you, if you wear glasses more often by now; when we see each other, you know.” Linda smiled.

“Do you know what you have just said? Are you serious?” Phil looked surprised.

“Of course, I’m deadly serious. I really like you very much Phil. You are smart, you are handsome and you are a funny guy. As far as I can tell, you seem perfect.”

“That’s really sweet of you. I would like to return the compliments.”

“But you already have spoken so nicely about me.”

“I know, but there’s so much more about you that I like.”

“Yeah, I could say so much more about you too, but we don’t want to spend the whole day complimenting each other, do we?”

“No”, and with that Phil kissed Linda. The kiss seemed to last for an eternity and neither of them wanted it to end, but finally they had to part because they were lacking air.

“Time for another compliment. I love the way you kiss?”

“Oh, do you? I want you to be sure.”

And with that they kissed again.
